When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos? (Sunshine Coast Guide)

Captured by Janette | Sunshine Coast Newborn Photographer

One of the most common questions I get is:

“When should I book my newborn photos?”

The short answer? There’s no single “perfect” time — but there are ideal windows depending on the style of images you love.

The “Traditional” Newborn Window (5–14 Days)

This is when babies are:

• Sleepier

• Easier to settle

• Naturally curl into those womb-like poses

Perfect for:

  • Curled, sleepy poses
  • Soft, dreamy images
  • Studio-style newborn photography

2–6 Weeks Old

At this stage, babies:

• Start to stretch out more

• May be more alert

• Still have those newborn features

Perfect for:

  • A mix of sleepy + awake images
  • More natural, relaxed poses

6–10 Weeks Old (Yes, It’s Still Beautiful!)

Many parents worry they’ve “missed the window” — you absolutely haven’t.

At this stage:

• Babies are more expressive

• Eye contact begins

• Gorgeous personality starts to shine

Perfect for:

  • Smiles and interaction
  • Connection with parents
  • Lifestyle images

So… When Should You Book?

I recommend booking your session during pregnancy to secure availability, then we schedule your session once baby arrives.

Studio vs In-Home Timing

• Studio sessions → best within first 2 weeks

• In-home sessions → flexible, anytime in first 2 months

The Most Important Thing to Remember

There is no wrong time.

Every stage is beautiful — it just depends on the kind of memories you want to capture.
